my journey through the pursuit of love & happiness

dating dictionary

Hoping to ease the battle, or rather, miscommunication between the sexes I did a little research among men and women and came up with the following dating definitions.

Tah-dah! A dating dictionary in hierarchy order.

A date: A pre-planned activity, usually where the guy pays, where two people have the intentions of getting to know the other person on a potentially romantic level.

This can include a group date.

Not to be confused with a ‘meet up.’

In a relationship: This means that you have both agreed (as in a talk has been had) to be in a relationship with each other i.e. boyfriend and girlfriend. (In my opinion, this does not necessarily imply that you two are serious about each other, though level of implied seriousness probably differs with age.)

Exclusive: Not yet in a relationship, but above dating/seeing someone. You have feelings for this person and they are definitely considered relationship material. You do not want to share the other person.

This phase can also be known as trial and error boyfriend/girlfriend.

What is debateable is whether or not hooking up with someone else while being exclusive is actually cheating.

Dating/Seeing someone: Spending time with someone alone outside of the bedroom in public. In this instance you are allowed to see other people, but there is the intent of potential relationship material and actual feelings being involved.

Does not imply that you slept together.

Talking: Casually hanging out, usually in groups. A definite interest has been implied/verbalized. A pre-dating phase.

Hooking up: A casual encounter between two people where the purpose is getting off, such activities do not necessarily imply sex.

Not to be confused with a one night stand. ‘Hooking up’ implies that it is somehow a semi-regular encounter. You were probably drunk. And so was the other person. (At least for the first time.)
